I don’t know why geese get such a bad rap. I have gotten good about dealing with hormonal spring angst and anticipating and avoiding bites but even still.
The score so far:
My 6 ganders: 5 attempted bites, only one landed a bite.
My two drakes: I lost count. Just this last week alone I was probably bitten 70 times. I’m covered in little pinchy bruises.
Ducks are the chihuahuas of the waterfowl world.
Nah the girls are usually non-confrontational unless a nest is involved. Delphi and Dandelion don’t like it if I get near their nests while they’re on them so I just don’t bother. Friday and Tuesday aren’t bothered at all even if I reach under them and pull an egg out, Apricot is unpredictable when it comes to the nest, it depends on her mood if I’m allowed near or not.Muscovies must be different than other breeds of duck. Mine are like geese without the hormonal rage.
I don’t have Muscovies myself but from observing other people’s birds they’re much different than domestic mallard type breeds behaviorally.
Do your geese ever go after you as well as your ganders?
Ganders, they just can’t resist babies! My sweetest goose, Dakota, is officially broody as of today. She's the one who will practically sit in your lap if you let her, which of course means she has no respect for me when I'm anywhere near the nest - and she knows where the soft, vulnerable spots are on the human body! I'm pretty sure I have whole chunks missing from me now. My other geese would let me reach under them to check out the eggs, but I'm thinking of putting yellow caution tape around that corner and calling it off limits until things either hatch or start smelling rotten. You're on your own, Dakota; good luck!

I'm curious to see how things work out. She's my first American to go broody, and it's kinda late. The only gander who's been getting any action lately is my year old toulouse, Picard. My other ganders have been too busy parenting this gangly lot:

They're at that age where I'm getting nervous about being able to tell them apart from their parents. Personality is a dead giveaway, but I put zip ties on every gosling except the speckled ones just to be sure.
Bonus fun times! A crazy guinea has decided to go broody over Dakota's nest. At least it's safe from predators there.
