Thank you very much for this advice. I do keep quail in a separate area to chickens so it would totally make sense that pheasants wouldn’t tolerate chickens aswell. I am a very much a novice with gamebirds so I appreciate all the feedback. Maybe in future I will build an aviary at the back of my...
Thank you! It did look a little smaller than other aviaries I have seen but I thought that was the case. I would be breeding bantams in that coop except council won’t let me 😭
Hi all,
I had a strange but exciting thought yesterday about making the side pen in my chicken run into a pheasant aviary. It is 3 meters x 2 meters and is 2.5 meters tall. I would only keep three in there but I’m wondering if it would work. It would definitely need some patching up but I think...
They get their usual grain and pellets as well as any kitchen scraps that we know are safe for chickens. We do have a bit of a rat problem but I don’t think it’s that. I have given her some child safe pain killers and plenty of water. I’ll see what I can do but she is extremely thin which makes...
I walked into my chicken coop today to find this scene. My very young RIR Buffy was laying twitching on the ground. Bright eyes and very aware of what is going on, she is unable to walk and very light. I can feel her keel and can almost touch my fingers together through her chest. She had been...
I can agree with the pearls. I have had that happen before. As with the pharaoh, I have only ever had them as adults. I did have a hen hatch last year but a rat got her before she could moult.
Her back is much greyer but she doesn’t sit still for long. I had to put her in a tree to get a still photo. Apparently quail don’t like sitting in trees 😂
I have another question and it is slightly different but do pharaoh hens become darker as they age? I have one older hen that is really brown and one much younger hen that is almost grey I’ll show some photos
I have 2 new hens that could either be from me OR a breeder who has celadon quail. I think one has layer but I’m not sure about the other. I’m moving a hen to another pen to see if it’s her lays the blue egg
Hi all, sorry I haven’t been online for a while, I have been pretty busy. My sister went outside to collect the eggs and found an egg that she claimed was green. I took a look and sure enough it’s a bluish green egg. I am ecstatic. If this is a celadon quail I will be beyond happy. Unfortunately...
