    Boy or girl

About a month ago I bought five 8 week old pullets. Four are black and one is white. Today my stepdaughter said that the white one is a roo. It is some version of Easter Egger. Any thoughts from the experts whether this is a pullet or a cockrell?

    Hatching eggs from young hen.

What is the opinion about hatching eggs from very young hens? Eggs that are still in the small egg category. Not those little ones right after a young hen starts laying, but maybe after a month or two.

    Any boys in this bunch?

Here are my 5 acquisitions from a week ago. I was told they were about 2 months old by the seller (emphasis on "about"). All 5 are supposed to be pullets but they were not 100% sure. The gender is identifiable at hatch time, but someone else hatched these for them. So now l am wondering what...

    How old are we?

I just bought 5 pullets earlier this week. The seller said they were about 2 months old, but they look younger to me. Anyone dare to take an expert guess? There are 4, which I am told are Mar Bar. I don't remember what the white one is, but also some version of a green laying cross.

Young hen looks like pure Plymouth Barred Rock

I have a young hen that looks like a pure Plymouth Barred Rock, but she is not. The father is some mixture that has the gene and he looks relatively close to the breed but none of the hens who could had laid the egg look anything like a Rock. Is this something that is very rare or fairly common...

    Is my rooster worthless?

I have a rooster named Peter. He is a very big boy. I had a larger number of roosters than hens, so I separated the hens from roosters and put Peter with the girls. The reason I chose him was because he was the most friendly towards me. I could pick him up any time and he did not run away nor...

    Lost a hen

Yesterday I lost one of my hens. I am currently away and have someone looking after my chickens. Unfortunately the automatic door malfunctioned and I had him take it off. I had not had any issues with wild predators before, although there was a opossum that did steal eggs in the evening...

Another round of what's my gender

This is a chicken that someone abandoned and I took in. The first two photos I am guessing were taken at about 2 months old. I cannot be sure of the age because this is when I "adopted" them. I am making my guess based on some chicks that I hatched few months earlier. The next 3rd photo is take...

    Cockerel?

This bird is now 4 months old. Barnyard mix. I am still trying to figure out if it is male or female. Originally it was identified as female at about 2 months old. Then a month later the votes changed to male. Another month has passed and honestly, I still cannot tell. It is one of seven. It is...

Please let it be a she

Backyard mixed about 3 months old. This one is the friendliest one of 7 chicks. I hope it's a girl as 4 are 99.9% certain to be boys and I am certain of only 2 to be girls. To me, this one is a toss up as the comb is not nearly as developed as its brothers but it is also bigger than the comb of...

    Eggs or soup?

This is one of my seven12 week old backyard mixes. I have been playing the guessing game with these chicks for few weeks now. About a month ago the guess was going towards a pullet but now I am thinking that it's a he. That red comb is what worries me. What say the experts?

    Crossing breeds

If a rooster mates with a hen and both of them are mixed, will their offspring look the same or different? I had a great girl hatch this spring. She is big, friendly without being annoying and I like the way she looks. She is all black but when she spreads her wings, there is white feather at...

Pullet standing on top of injured young rooster

I have an injured 8 month old rooster who was wounded by a dog attack. Because my backyard has a lot of young roosters, I separated him and put him in an 8'x12' fenced in are with two very mellow ladies. He has his own big dog crate for sleeping). His health has declined since the attack and...

    Any males here?

I have 7 chicks that hatched between. 6 and 7 weeks ago. I have been trying to get an good photo of each individually to try to get everyone's help in determining gender but after multiple attempts I have given up. I thought I would try a different approach. Provide a series of photos and ask...

    Yoke color

My white leghorn just started laying (her 3rd egg was today). What I noticed is that the yoke is much lighter in color than my other hens, all of whom lay brown eggs. The yoke looks like something in a store bought egg. Not that rich, deep golden color I get from my other girls. They all are...

    Boy or girl

These are mixed breed hatched by a broody hen. About 6 weeks old. Any guesses whether boy or girl, or is it still too early to tell?

    What are these?

These two were abandoned about a month ago and I took them in. They were still very young and I assumed it was a pullet and a cockerel. Yesterday I found a white egg in their enclosure. Any ideas on what breed and gender these are. I was sure that the white one was a little cockerel but that...

Help. 1 day old and looks like stuff coming from its vent.

This little guy was hatched a day ago and abandoned by the hen (hatched 2 weeks after it last sibling). I have him/her in the house under brooder heater. Today I noticed that there is no poop. I checked for pasty butt and it had a big dark brown wad there. So I soaked it in warm water and begin...

    What gender?

Can anyone tell what gender these two might be? They are between 2 and 3 weeks old, mixed.
