I'm having exactly the same experience, except mine are not sitting on any eggs. They're in side-by-side nesting boxes. I was surprised to see them brooding at this age. It's only their first season and they've only just started laying.

I've read about those, and it could be a cyst. A bacterial or fungal infection could cause it, but I'm sure one of the experts can weigh in.

I got some better pictures of Chonk and Lola, who is looking more and more like a Larry. Sadly, all 4 will need to be rehomed.
