Old farmer at bFADFarms

I am 72 years young, have been farming since before I was 9 at which time I lead the horse that pulled the plow as my father directed the plow. That horse had the innate ability to step on my foot every chance she got. At 1800 # it hurt for a little guy. Have raised chickens at 16. 525 birds and only lost 5. It takes 1 ton of grain and a LOT of weeds to raise them to fryer size. Live on a small farmette where I have raised cows both dairy and beef, 60+ goats, sheep, pigs, pure bred Aussies, tabbies, rabbits, turkeys, geese, ducks, 17 breeds of chickens, and cutornex quail. Enjoy sharing my experiences and insights. Would consider myself a student because I am constantly learning, and won’t stop till the day I am laid to rest. I do have a few things I have learned about this contraption they call the internet though and will share it later. Presently I have three breeds of chickens, Asian heritage hogs, hi bred sheep both wool and hair (trying to find a way to manufacture a wool product to return a profit on the wool), and NZ rabbits. I have a wonderful daughter-in-law who is the educator for a County Conservation District who has phenomenal programs on how to farm and never spent a day on a farm in her life except for farm tours, I have a neighbor behind me who has planted the same crop in the fields 90% of the time bordering my property for 35 years pouring on chemical fertilizers, poisons, and planting gmo corn and finely one year he planted a winter crop of radishes, hemp, and clover and had the best corn ever after he killed the crop to plant the corn never minding that the clover was lush and 18” tall and could have been sold as hay before the corn and still got a corn crop. His statement, “ they never taught us this stuff in college”. I use crop rotation, natural compost and fertilizer from my animals and green manure and my weeds are way over my 6’2” frame. We have created a society of no farmer farmers who don’t even know what it’s like to live on a farm, caudal an ill baby calf through the night giving it all you can with the hope to sustain it only to have it die in your arms in the morning. If an individual wants to give their opinion on the internet they should first spend 5 years on a farm, instead of spreading rumors which are more detrimental to the charges they raise than good they do. To teach, the person should spend 7 years on a farm and study it’s inhabitants before they spread false info. I sat in a class room of a sixth grade class and heard a 52 year old teacher teach her class a blatant lie and never corrected it for the class. We need to talk to the old farmers ask them questions and learn at their feet instead of shipping them off to a retirement home and go on our merry way. Now you know who I am.
